So, imagine having the task of gargantuan proportions of designing the sequel to one of the most aesthetic movies of all time and actually managing to get an Oscar for it.
Director of Photography Roger Deakins, BSC, ASC, CBE did just that. He has finally won a well deserved Oscar for his cinematography work on Blade Runner 2049, and I simply had to write an update about it, because I’ve been in love with his work since forever (who isn't?). And in my opinion (one I know I share with many) he should have won at least several Oscars throughout his career already.
He has been nominated fourteen times, but never won an Oscar until now, despite the fact that he created/envisioned many creative and technical ways (always embracing new technologies) of visual storytelling to begin with. Others more or less copied these methods and design principles later on and DID win Oscars for it.
So here’s to Roger Deakins, BSC, ASC, CBE and his first Oscar.
It was long overdue.
